Fire Safety at Varian Ranch
The Varian Ranch is blessed with a topography consisting of rolling grass-covered hills dotted with oak woodlands. While beautiful to view, this same blessing presents a potential fire hazard to our wonderful homes as our climate becomes drier and warmer. Recent large wildfires throughout the Western United States have reminded us of this potential risk and the need to be better prepared. The Varian Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors (Board) initiated actions in 2020 to help reduce the fire risk on Lot 49. Among these actions was the successful application for a Fire Safe Council project proposal to reduce and remove vegetation fuel loading. Removal of deadwood debris in the residential areas of the ranch remains an ongoing effort.
Water Reliability
While no community or municipal water system can provide long-term continuous water service during a severe wildfire emergency, the Varian Ranch Mutual Water Company does have an Emergency Response Plan that initiates actions in the event of a nearby wildfire. This includes immediately refilling the water storage reservoir to full capacity and placing the emergency backup power generator into the Auto start mode in case of a local power outage. The water company's Water System Specialist would remain in close communication with the Ranch Foreman for any additional actions needed. The water system currently has two healthy water wells available that can pump 145 and 230 gallons per minute that can assist during firefighting efforts.
